HITA FERRY VISION AND POSSIBILITIES

Harsens Island Transportation Authority (HITA) has been partnering with Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority (EUPTA) to gain understanding of their operation as a model for our community.

Their staff has been very helpful sharing information of all kinds, including operating costs, ferry construction, dock construction, insurance, and more.  Members of the HITA board have met with them on multiple occasions and want to share some pictures of their operations to show what is possible when State and Federal funding is accepted.  You will see many photos here, some from their website (www.eupta.net) and some that we took personally.

On this page you will find a video –  (Day in the life of Drummond Island Deckhand) showing how their ice breaking ferries make it possible to run 365 days a year 24 hours a day.  Yes you heard that correctly – NO SHUT DOWNS or interruption in service for residents, contractors, or visitors.

Hope you enjoy them and share in our excitement as we diligently work to bring the latest technology to a ferry system that could serve Harsens Island.
